I would probably agree
if I'm attending a gathering of elitists, as an unknown, I'd opt to wear what the socially accepted thing to do is, so I don't stand out. We must remember though, that these people, actors/athletes/rock stars, etc,.. are for the most part, not "born" into money, and I would say they're sense of individual style/personality is more important (rightly so I would argue) than wearing the right thing in every situation. It's more about wearing the right thing for them, individually, and whichever watch company they have contracts with at the moment tells them to wear in some cases. This is one case where I think the liberalization of the "rules" is a good thing. They aren't one of the gazillian unknown/unseen millionaire businessmen climbing the social ladder types afterall.
Having said that, I seriously doubt we'll be seeing Mark Wahlberg show up at one of these gatherings in shorts and a t-shirt. For sure, there is peer pressure all up and down the class scale on what we should wear, how we should act, who we should associate with, etc,... but there's no way I'm going to judge a man solely on his choice of watch. Who he associates with and how he treats his fellow man, no matter his social stature is what I would look at.
